This article explains the different types of roulette bets and their safety in terms of odds of winning from them. If there is one thing that the team at Fruity King NZ believe in, it is keeping their customers as well informed as possible, which is why this page has been created. Knowing a safe bet and how to achieve it is necessary for all gamblers, especially when discussing roulette betting strategies and systems.

Is There a Difference Between a Roulette Strategy and Roulette System?

Many players consider a roulette betting strategy and a roulette betting system the same thing. There is little distinction between the two words. Roulette is a game of chance, so you rely heavily on Lady Luck for a winning streak.

So let’s start our journey of finding the safest bets by discussing Inside and Outside bets in roulette

Inside Bets

All inside bets are found in the centre of the roulette table’s layout (makes sense!) This type of bet is placed on single numbers or a specific combination of numbers, making inside bets a greater risk with a lower chance of winning. However, the payout would be large if you did manage a win.

Below are the different types of inside bets you can try:

  • The Straight Up is a bet placed on an individual number from 1 – 36, and the single zero (and double zero if playing American roulette games). The payout on this bet is high at 35:1 but has a low chance of winning. You can place as many single bets (straight-up) as you like in one round.
  • The Split bet covers two adjacent numbers, and your chips will be placed on the line between the two chosen numbers. Suppose you manage a win on a split bet. In that case, the odds are set at 17:1. Always remember that the numbers next to each other on the table layout, say eight and nine are not next to each other on the roulette wheel
  • A Street bet or Row bet covers three numbers in a row on the table layout. The numbers follow each other. Your chips are placed at the bottom of the row (below the first number in the line). If you manage a win, the payout is 11:1.
  • Corner bets are sometimes called Square bets, with your chip placed on the corner where your chosen four numbers meet. For instance, in-between 8, 9, 11 and twelve. If you managed a win with a Corner bet, the payout would be 8:1. Corner bets are one of the most popular forms of inside bets as they up your coverage of the table whilst still having good odds.
  • Six-line bets cover six consecutive numbers and cover all the numbers on two adjacent rows. To make this bet, place your chip on the line separating the outside and the inside bets between the two rows of numbers you want to cover. If you did manage to win using this bet, the payout would be 5:1.
  • A Basket bet is sometimes called a sucker bet, unique to American roulette. The Basket bet is five-numbered and has a low probability of a decent payout, meaning the house edge is much higher at 7.9%. In contrast, all other roulette bets have a house edge of 5.3% (American roulette).

What is an Outside Bet?

Outside bets in roulette differ from inside bets in that they cover a whole set of numbers, such as red or black, odd or even.

Because of the wider coverage of the roulette table, outside bets are great for new players as they have a higher chance of winning but with lower payouts. As they have a higher chance of winning, some players would consider this group of bets as ‘safer’.

  • Red or black is a bet where you wager that the winning number will be either red or black. The bet is even money, meaning you will win the same amount as you initially bet plus your initial bet.
  • Odd or even bets cover all the odd and all the even numbers on the table; there are eighteen of each. The odd or even bet is also even money odds.
  • High or low bets cover numbers one through eighteen (low) and nineteen through thirty-six (high). Again, this outside bet has even money odds.
  • Column bets cover one of three columns and all numbers within the column. The chances of winning a column bet are lower, but the payout is higher at 2:1.
  • The dozens bet covers one of the three dozen on the roulette table (1-12, 13-24, and 25-36). A single dozen win will payout at 2:1.

There is another type of bet which is unique to European and French roulette, and that is the ‘called bet’, which can be fixed or variable. Bets are made according to their position on the roulette wheel. Fixed bets stay the same, whilst variable bets can change based on individual preference.

Fixed Called Bets

  • Neighbours of Zero is a bet on all numbers between 22 and 25 on the wheel.
  • Thirds of the Wheel is a bet on one-third of the wheel, so those numbers are between 33 and 27.
  • Zero Game is a bet on the seven numbers closest to 0, which are between 12 and 15.
  • The Orphans is a bet made on eight numbers – 17. 34, 6, 1, 20, 14, 31, and zero.

Variable Called Bets

  • Neighbour is a bet on a single number and the two on either side of it (5 total).
  • The Final Straight bets on single numbers that end in the same digits. For instance, 0, 10, 20, 30, or 1, 11, 21, 31.
  • The Final Split is a bet that covers all numbers based on two chosen numbers. For instance, if you chose 1 and 2, you would bet on 1, 2, 11, 12, 21, 22, 31, and 32.

In Conclusion

Any gambling game, including roulette, is a game of chance and a guessing game. There is no surefire way of ensuring a win. However, there are those bets that are considered safer than others. In the case of roulette, we have described the different types of bets you can make, with all of the outside bets showing a better chance of a win but with reduced payouts.
